  • Carla was waiting when we arrived and she showed us around and explained the architecture of the house. The house, which was just completed earlier this year, is clearly a labor of love by the owner who used a very inventive and playful architect. The architect not only came up with the spanish, moorish design, but he also designed the beautiful and whimsical floor and wall tiles that decorate most of the interior surfaces, from playful Maine lobsters to passion flowers to arms, hands and fingers in an interlaced pattern. In addition the architect's brother designed whimsical wrought iron balcony and stair rails, gates and fixtures. The second floor one bedroom unit is lovely with a well equipped kitchen with deluxe appliances and finishes, a large patio and good sized bedroom and master bath. The ground floor second bedroom shares a large tiled bathroom with another bedroom and the bathroom access is through an uncovered, outdoor patio, which is espexially inconvenient when cold or rainy.

  • Our family stayed at El Zapato over Christmas, and it was truly magical. The house is so beautiful--unique and fun in every way--and Carla was a wonderful hostess. What an amazing experience!

  • The home is magical and even better than pictured! Carla was a great host, very helpful and lives in the top level so is easily accessible if needed. All beds are extremely comfortable (pull out couch was even wow!) with amazing sheets as well. We couldn't get enough of the patio space - nearly all of our time was spent out there even when it was raining. Thank you again Carla for allowing us to stay in this gem!

  • Carla's home is perfect for any type of stay in a Santa Barbara. The home itself is beautiful and Carla's communication great. You can park your car and never need it again-El Zapato is close to everything. We'll definitely be back for our next trip to Santa Barbara.

  • Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful home with us, taking such a kind and generous approach to hosting travelers. We could not have had a better time, and the house was absolutely fantastic. We could walk everywhere, and when we stayed in, we were able to relax and enjoy the beautiful decks and courtyard. It truly was the best place I have ever stayed in any city. We could not have been happier. We really appreciate your home and you. Hope to stay again in the future.

  • El Zapato is everything it describes, visually exceptional inside the apartment and looking out to the beautiful views Santa Barbara offers. The 1 bedroom, with options for 2 additional bedrooms allows for a cozy place to stay whether you wander the neighborhoods for great breakfast, lunch,& dinner options or cook all your meals in. There is plenty of outdoor space for lounging, though like many wonderful urban homes the inside space is not spacious, but it is efficient. Luckily Santa Barbara has outstanding weather, so there is not a lot of need for hanging around inside other than sleeping. All the amenities listed in the description for this rental were accurate, beds were comfortable, the apartment was clean and had all the necessities of home. Shampoo/conditioner must have run out, but there was hand/body soap. Parking was easy, neighborhood was reasonably quiet, safe and in a perfect location to walk anywhere. This is truly a one of a kind vacation rental. On a side note, if you happen to be someone that doesn't read as much as you look, be sure to read all the details here. Its easy to get excited and distracted with the aesthetics of El Zapato and forget or overlook the description around the layout and whats available. This is a special place.

  • El Zapato is like living in an art installation - so fanciful and beautiful. We had a mini family reunion with my sister and her husband it it was in a perfect location, walkable to downtown Santa Barbara and the Pier and many good restaurants. Carla has a book in the Green Cabana with great tips about the space and the neighborhood. My sister and brother-in-law stayed in Lobster 1. If you use that option be aware that there is street noise, which they were able to block out by keeping the fan on. Also, if the weather isn't good there is limited indoor gathering space if you don't use the gorgeous deck. These are all minor concerns as this was one of the most special AirBnB experiences we have had and I would highly recommend El Zapata for anyone wishing to have a beautiful, comfortable, well located space in Santa Barbara. The whole space, including the two Lobster apartments on the ground floor and the Penthouse apartment, can be used for special events or family reunions - I think this would be great fun!

  • If you ever wanted to live IN a work of art, this would be your opportunity! Custom tile and metal work abounds, creating an atmosphere to please your senses! With close proximity to both downtown (State St.) and the "Funk Zone" - an eclectic array of wine tasting, brew pubs, restaurants, and galleries make the zone a very interesting and fun place to visit. A short walk to the ocean and wharf offer up opportunities for kayaking, paddle boarding, beach fun, and food (on the wharf). And when your day is done, enjoy a drink or two the 2nd floor patio: what a wonderful house and experience. Loved it!

  • Our stay at El Zapato was our best Airbnb experience to date. Our host Carla was wonderful and helped us with every step of the planning, booking and enjoyment of her home and all it had to offer. If you're looking for a top notch property and a fantastic host near the downtown Santa Barbara area then look no further.

  • There’s nothing like staying in an art object, albeit a big one. The kaleidoscopic collars give homage to Gaudi’s Park Guell home in Barcelona, which we visited last year. The artisanal tiles recall the ornate homes of Lisbon. The kids thought of it all as some enormous toy. I went home scouring the internet for a place to buy these imaginative masterpieces for my own home up north. While the rooms were small, the vast outdoor veranda made up for it. The empty garage was perfect for storing our bikes, which put within reach our daily adventures. The location can’t be beat, 15 minutes from the beach, and ten minutes from a cold beer on State Street to recover. Small town Santa Barbara has all the amenities of a big city, the art museums, zoo, the outdoor concerts, while retaining the Mission, the farmers market, and the charm of a rural village. Everyone seemed to know each other here. Thanks Carla for lending us a home away from home. Randy

  • We really enjoyed our stay here! The house is absolutely beautiful with amazing views of the city! The design of the house is whimsical and fun--gorgeous tiles and ironwork! Everyday we discovered something new about the design of the house. We loved relaxing on the deck with friends and drinking wine. It is also within walking distance to the Funk Zone, the beach, State Street and many eateries. We also took a one day wine excursion with Diane from Destination Vine and we highly recommend!! Our week long stay was very relaxing there and definitely recommend it! We will back again for sure!!
